University Professor Information

Computer Science Lynn Stauffer

Dr. Stauffer was extremely nice and genuinely seems to enjoy teaching. She really will go out of her way to help you! Never had a negative experience with her. If you're trying to decide between professors, definitely choose her!

Tons of fun in Professor Stauffer's class. Just the right mix of challenging and enjoyable. Always willing to help.

She is an awesome teacher. The class is really hard for me, and I'm struggling. But if I didn't have her as a teacher, I'd be failing for sure. Great teaching style and very eager to help students.

Suzanne Rivoire

Rivoire was a great CS teacher to have for intro. She was very clear, helpful, and expected useful skills to be developed from her students. Also, a great connection to have in the CS department.

My favorite CS teacher at this school. Take every class you can get with her. She's quite difficult but you will learn more from this teacher than you will from any other two combined.

She is absolutely one of the best teachers you will ever take a class from. She is generally caring for you as a student, willing to help always, extremely clear, and knows her stuff but she will pile on the homework, and her tests are challenging. If she is teaching a class you will learn from her. Take her!

Glenn Carter:

Glenn is the best person I've ever known, let alone best professor. He inspires me in so many ways, I have lost track. His choice in flowy, big print shirts, impeccable. Take this class if you want to have the time of your life, while learning basic computer skills.

I came into this class knowing nothing and had a complete lack of interest in anything to do with computers. Now I am going to minor in Computer Science! Glenn was amazing and makes things understandable for those with little to no knowledge of computers. Lecture quizzes are tough, but the labs are what really saved my grade.

Glenn Carter is my hero. If you study and go to lecture the tests are not hard to pass and he helps you out a lot. You can take tests on different days if needed. I learned a lot and actually really enjoyed the class. Plus he is the cutest man in the world and I just want to hug him. He loves computers and his mom more than life.

Engineering
: Dr. Haider Khaleel

Dr. Khaleel gives clear instruction and does a superb job explaining the course material. He is also a great guy and an incredibly caring professor. I'm looking forward to taking the electromagnetism course with him this coming semester.

Great teacher! If you do your Homework regularly, you will get good grades on the midterms. He's extremely helpful

Dr. Khaleel was engaging, educational and entertaining, he breaks tough topics into easily understood ones. Really one of my favorite teachers of all times-

Farid Farahmand

After almost graduating and taking a ton of classes with him, I can honestly say he is the best teacher I've ever had. He will make you work harder than you have ever worked but you will learn a ton and be ready to tackle any real-world problem with confidence and a keen intellect -he will literally make you smarter. The man!

Dr. Farahmand is an excellent instructor for beginning engineering students and is based solely on lab work. His "final" is to build a throwing machine and gives nothing else. However, my complaint is that he's really not clear sometimes and doesn't teach the materials properly. He's really great, but pay close attention to him.

Farid is cool but HARD! Fair grader. We had weekly quizzes (read: really rough) but the midterm was fair. Final was near impossible because we ran out of time to cover the material on it but the final grades were curved I believe. Smart, energetic and you will learn a ton. The projects literally eat time. Good class, good teacher.

Don Estreich

He is always there during office hours and if you can't make office hours, he will schedule another time to work with you. Attendance is not mandatory but a sheet is sent around and it is a small percentage of your grade. The study guide is not always what's on the test.

Don is super friendly, he loves what he teaches. Engineering is not for me tho. Not intimidating at all. All powerpoints are online which makes students not want to go. He's a bit too nice and students started to walk out of class once they realize that he didn't care. But its super rude of people. Not an easy A b/c u do have to study for it

He's a really nice guy and teaches some cool stuff but is too nice to the students imo. His tests are easy but I would study all the lectures before the test because his review sessions don't cover most of what is going to be on the test. And if you do mess up on a test he will most likely let everyone redo it for a better grade.

Business
: Linda Nowak

Greatest teacher ever Linda understands students and relates to them well!

Easiest class i've ever taken. The class is very laid back and material is easy to learn just by listening to her talk. Lectures are very short and to the point. The best part she tells you EXACTLY what is on the test. Word for word. Best part classes only last half hour to hour. recomend taking every class she is teaching.

She is one of the best teachers I have ever had at Sonoma State, and a great counselor.

Sandra Newton

I love Sandra! She makes a pretty flat topic fun. Not only is she clear in letting students know what she expects of you, but she obviously really cares about all of her students and will provide help to anyone who needs it. I would recommend taking Sandra for BUS 319 if you want to learn and have a fun time doing so.

Take Newton for this class. 5 weeks out of the semester were online, which was nice. There is one group project, and one short presentation. A lot of small assignments, but Sandra is an easy grader. 3 exams that are straight from the reading material. Also, there is a lab attached to this class, so every thursday is a microsoft office assignment.

Ahhh I love Sandra! Very fair teacher and teaches with enthusiasm. She is very knowledgeable and always willing to go the distance to help her students. Do not hesitate on taking her.

Zachary Wong

Assignments and tests were all straightforward, mostly painless and I googled for answers on most of them. When it comes to online classes Wong's absolutely the man and he is a fantastic grader. Ask friends who have taken him online. I have taken other online classes and none that can be compared to his online Stats or MIS classes.

First day of class he brought up rate my professor (so hi professor Wong!) This dude is the chillest homie. Not only does he have the greatest personality known to man, but he grades perfectly. He's straight forward and a delight to be in his class. Thanks for a great semester!

This was the best stats class. He didn't make you memorize the material, he made you apply it. I would recommend this class to every business major. Super easy, show up and pass.

Students Talks About This University

Academics:

College Freshman Jan 20

Awesome professors and small class sizes! I feel like I am really learning!

College Sophomore Jan 13

The workload really depends how hard the class is and there are many study areas throughout the whole campus which is very useful to any student.

College Freshman Jan 4

I love being in the Hutchins program. The professors in the program are very interested in what each student has to say. Because there are only about 15 students in each class, the professors know each student by name which helps to create a feeling of importance in each student. Outside of the Hutchins department I have found the professors to be very helpful and flexible with student needs. The registration process is relatively easy and there are many people willing to help people with registration. The workload for me was very easy and i enjoyed studying in my dorm or at the library most of the time.

College Freshman Feb 12 2015

I would say that Sonoma State is designed to help students with academic success. There are services in place to help students with special needs. Professors are more than supportive and the workload is usually reasonable.

College Senior Jun 11 2014

Professors are great especially that normally classes are very small, registration process is highly stressful for all students because we don't sometimes get the class we need. The library is very helpful especially the 3rd floor which is the quiet zone.

Campus Quality:

College Freshman Feb 12 2015

Sonoma State has technically everything every college needs (e.g. computer labs, 3-story library, recreation center, and even a pond).

College Junior Jul 15 2014

The best thing about Sonoma State is the Facilities, from the student and recreation center to the cafe, all deserve 5 stars

College Senior Jul 5 2014

We have great facilities the campus is gorgeous and there is everything you could possibly need. The school focuses on being green so there is reclaimed water used and reclaimed wood for the recreation center it is all very eco friendly. As well as our performing arts center the Green Music Hall is considered to have the best sound in Northern California.

College Sophomore Jun 27 2014

Although Sonoma State is in the middle of the nowhere gives the school a beautiful nature filled atmosphere. Also the location gives the school somewhat of a more chill vibe than most college towns being that it is in the middle of wine country. Sonoma State's location gives students a nice balance between the chill life of wine country, but still offers access to the city being an hour away from one of the most exciting cities in the world San Francisco.

College Freshman Jun 10 2014

They have a lovely gym, with a rock climbing wall. I go their with my roommates to distress sometimes. I love it, they have plenty of different places to play sports and it can be indoors and outdoors. They have campus activities through out the year to help their students remain with minimal stress. I remember the color non-run. It was like normal color runs that go on only, no running just a bunch of the powder being thrown everywhere. They also hosted a puppy day near finals, students would get to hang out and play with the dogs. There was a lot of different plays and comedy events through out the year. They managed to always have something going on each week.

Diversity:

College Freshman Feb 2

People are generally accepting of everyone on campus. I have not heard about intolerance too much.

College Freshman Feb 12 2015

Sonoma State University is predominately white with a somewhat large Latino minority. However, most students, staff, and faculty have socially liberal views and is very accepting to all.

College Sophomore Jun 22 2014

I would say that the students of Sonoma State University are pretty diverse. There are plenty of different clubs and organizations for students to be involved in that do not discriminate based on race, religion, political beliefs or sexual orientation. Students are encouraged to participate in student counsel or joining a debate team or even a sorority or fraternity, which make up over 20% of Sonoma's student population.

College Sophomore Jun 14 2013

Sonoma State has decent diversity and is incredibly accepting to all minorities. When problems arise, Sonoma State handles them with elegance and a firm hand. It seems that religious and political beliefs are not a problem on this campus and students are able to speak freely on their personal beliefs.

Guys & Girls:

College Sophomore Jul 2 2014

everyone is friendly for the most part and most look after each other even if they don't know the person

College Freshman Feb 12 2015

Coming from a guys point of view, I find that there seems to be an equal amount of guys and girls. Nothing to special.

College Freshman Dec 22 2014

lots of pretty and fun girls. many guys I have met are nice

College Freshman Jun 10 2014

I have met some of the nicest people here at Sonoma, most were really welcoming and friendly. I think that I have made some really great friends through out the year. There are different kind of people, friendly and not so friendly, but overall the atmosphere is great here and I would not have it any other way. There are a lot of white students, if I had to guess I would say that more than 70 percent was white. There is a mix of people that have relationships and people who are just looking for fun. Overall, I think that there should be more of a variety, but I cannot expect that to change over the course of one year.

College Sophomore Jan 13 2014

The guys here are pretty good looking. It's a mostly white school, so if that's what you're looking for you've come to the right place. The problem is that they're nice to look at, but they're harder to meet if you're not involved in Greek life.

College Sophomore Dec 7 2013

It is nice to be a guy here because it is something like 80% women and i don't think i've been in one of the smaller classes where there were more than 4 guys in a 30 person class.
